After the theft of electricity cables and a bronze statue (of Neptune), a group of concerned citizens have held talks with the police in Puerto Plata.
They want to see various monuments in the harbour town guarded, to ensure that the statues (of which the residents are proud) are not stolen by thieves.
For example, they want extra guards around the huge statue of Christ at the top of Isabel de Torre mountain, the statue of King David on the Malecón, the old iron canons at Fort San Filipe, and the bronze statue of the country's hero, Gregorio Luperón.
The spokesperson for the police promised to consult his superiors and to give this serious problem due consideration.
