Help Sosúa Kids to school
The President and founder of the Dutch Foundation 'Stichting help Sosúa Kids naar School' (Help Sosúa Kids to school), Mrs. Sylvia Berkley visited recently our coastal towns. She stayed in the Casa Marina resort where she is well known. For her foundation, she brought a substantial amount of money from donors from the Netherlands. It was enough money to guarantee the salaries of teachers of 'Colegio Evangelico Asher' for the coming months. It is a school project with children from mainly Haitian parents, who live in the slums near the Air Force base next to the airport. These children have no birth certificates, and neither are registered in any office. For this reason they can not use the free public school education. Judith, a graduated lawyer (and a practicing Christian), together with her husband Roberto took the initiative to start a small nursery and primary school in 2006. They found a cheap room and good teachers who wanted to teach for little money. Fortunately, they came in contact with Sylvia. And she collected money in the Netherlands (from friends and acquaintances) to support this project.

In the meantime, the school grew quickly and students and teachers were happy to find a new and better building for their school.
Sylvia said during her last visit that she was happy to see that the traumatized children felt so comfortable and secure in school, and that this was her goal and she will continue to work hard for this project.
The school is doing well but there are also less attractive developments in Sosúia to report:
The streets in Sosúa have changed.
University
At night Haitian orphans sleep on the streets. A sad sight. Many fled from Haiti in the hope of a better life in the Dominican Republic. Thanks to extra donations from the donors, it was possible for Sylvia to give money to Judith for the Asher School, to help some twenty children from the street and give them shelter. Judith must purchase a number of beds, so that the children don't have to sleep on the floor. But she also has to purchase medicine, clothing and school supplies for the coming school year.
Sosúa Kids
From England (Canning trust) they got money to pay for two extra teachers at the Colegio for the next two years, a relief because the school is in urgent need of additional teachers.
There is also not enough space and a solution must be found.
In the meantime, they search for a suitable school building and shelter for the orphans.
The scores of the children are consistently good, and those who need tutoring lessons, get it during the summer holidays.
Because of the lack of additional salaries for teachers, Judith teaches the children themselves.
Actually the kids don't want holidays, because they want the attention and care that they receive in this school.
There is also a foundation in Sosúa called the 'Sosúa Kids' Foundation.
Also for this foundation Sylvia has brought funds from the Netherlands to buy school uniforms and school supplies for about 100 children in and around Sosúa.
And a positive report, thanks to the Foundation two students to graduated at the university.
One of them can even study in the USA.
