The president and founder Sylvia Berkley of the Dutch foundation 'Stichting Help Sosúakids to School' visited Sosúa again in May.
And again she had brought a lot of things for her school 'Colegio Evangelico Asher'.
Here follows her travelogue:
With seven people in a slowly reversing public taxi on a dual carriageway without functioning brakes, shock absorbers and lights, yes, then you know you're back in the Dominican Republic.
Shortly before we were in a traffic jam caused by a protest march by residents from Montellano.
But everyone remains calm and nothing happens.
I was on my way to Tania in Puerto Plata to go to the school where the 8 children study for whom we had bought the school uniforms and school supplies last November.
The kids are doing well and Tania and I bought school uniforms and shoes for three new students.
Along with Dave, I also visited our project in Camú.
Sosúa Kids
We were offered a lovely fruit basket and many drawings and paintings that the children had made.
Dave and I were surprised by the quantity and beautiful images.
The other kids we support through the Sosúa Kids Ass. are also doing well, said Janet.
Further good news from the Colegio Asher.
The Samaritans from Canada built a huge school building for the Colegio near their current poor accommodations in El Batey de la Unión.
At last, a complete school is created and lessons can be taught in every school course, because there will be created, which is now lacking, a physics and chemistry lab with supplies.
There is a large vegetable garden and chickens are kept.
The construction of this new school is entirely separate from the craft school under construction for the Colegio Asher in La Unión, by another group of Canadians.
So pretty soon there will be an elementary school, secondary school and a crafts school.
A wonderful project, which we achieved together.
Despite the tremendous help we are still in need of contributions for the teacher's salaries and school materials, Judith assured us.
When later the buildings are finished, they should not be vacant due to lack of money for teachers.
Recently, the Dominican government raised the salaries for the teachers of public schools significantly.
Sosúa Kids
If the salaries of the teachers at the Colegio Asher remain low, this will eventually lead to losing our teachers.
At the end it are these teachers, caregivers and cook, who give the children a dignified life and feeling.
Despite the economic crisis, Sylvia hopes that you will continue to support the underprivileged children.
