The reporter from Sosúa-News went Sunday January 25 to Puerto Plata and Maimón to check out the progress of the construction of the cruise ship port.
Newspapers say in October this year the first cruise ships will dock in the new harbor in Maimón.
The mall with small shops and restaurants on the waterfront with mangroves has been completed.
The small buildings are still closed because of course there are few customers.
Visitors now come from the resorts Riu Merengue and Riu Bachata.
The shopkeepers are certainly full of confidence.
In October, when at least daily one to two cruise ships dock, it will be really busy, they think.

Construction on the cruise port is in full swing (even on Sunday) and much has already been achieved.
The very long pier construction where two cruise ships can dock simultaneously is ready.
In bad weather the cruise ships must however anchor and passengers will be brought to shore per boat.
Also, Puerto Plata, Sosúa and Cabarete hope to benefit from the many hundreds of passengers who enjoy a cruise ship vacation.
Currently in Puerto Plata, the historic center of is completely renovated.
They are also working hard on the construction of an amphitheater at the end of the Malecón.
The theater will offer 3,500 visitors a seat.
The intention is that this theater is used for various cultural activities.

In Puerto Plata a lot of work is planned, asphalting some streets, renovating the historic center and the construction of the amphitheater, it all has to be ready in October.
The work goes on, though, but with many interruptions.
The entrepreneurs in Sosúa and Cabarete hope the cruise ship tourists will visit both beach resorts too.
They think that the tourist stays a few days in Sosúa or Cabarete and then continues the journey with another cruise ship.

This seems a bit implausible.
Most cruise ship tourist are usually middle-aged or older.
Wonder if they want to go all the way to Sosúa or Cabarete.
Both the city council and the foundation ADSS in Sosúa intend to organize additional activities in the evenings.
This is to make the two resorts towns more attractive for a visit.
