Friday morning, February 27 the celebration took place of the memorable event that 170 years ago Juan Pablo Duarte, Ramón Matos Mella and Francisco del Rosario Sánchez proclaimed the independent 'República Dominicana'.
From a stage on the helicopter field first Father Bernando Vásquez held a speeach to the crowd, followed by the mayor of Sosúa, Ilana Neumann.
Then followed a parade through the streets of El Batey and Charamicos of Sosúa.

The parade stopped for a few minutes at the park with the flags where more solemn words were spoken.
Then the parade, preceded by a fire engine with siren screaming, through the street Pedro Clisante then over the main road to Charamicos.
At the parade many students and teachers of the schools in Sosúa participated.
Representatives of official bodies of the municipality Sosúa, including Mayor Ilana Neumann walked along.
Unfortunately there was a serious damper on the festivities, this because at the end of the parade, opposite the ice cream shop Bon Helado in Charamicos a balcony collapsed under the weight of on looking children.
Several were injured and one of them unfortunately died from her injuries.
