Maundy Thursday and Good Friday (April 2nd and 3rd) before the Easter weekend, are commemorated with the most respect in Sosúa.
For example Friday afternoon, so Good Friday, Father Bernardo Vásquez of the parish in Charamicos, leads a large group of believers, who walk with a large wooden cross in a cloister along the beach.
It will be a quiet and devout afternoon because there may not be played any music nor dancing.
But the following Saturday and Sunday it's party time.
Semana Santa Sosúa
From all parts of the country, like Santo Domingo, Montellano, Puerto Plata, Santiago and La Vega, visitors will come to the beach resort to have a blasting weekend.
All hotels will be overbooked.
Especially at the beach it will be crowded.
The traffic police (AMET) will be strengthened with additional officers.
The volunteers from the Civil Guard will also be ready and present to respond to emergencies.
On the beach there is much to see and to do.
Besides the fish, chicken and other food sales, there are many performances by music bands.
There will also be all kinds of sports competitions where great prizes can be won.
There is a beauty bikini contest planned.
The festivities are sponsored by the Brugal rum factory and water company Sasino which is located in Sosúa.
By the end of Sunday afternoon it will be quieter on the beach.
Most visitors leave than back home.
With the end of the Semana Santa celebration it is also the start of the low season for Sosúa.
In the coming months it will be much quieter in the beach resort.
