Residents and spokespersons of some organizations in Cabarete have protested against the proposed bypass road around Cabarete.
Their objection is that the road will run through a protected natural area, a lagoon, which will be destroyed by the construction of the road.
Furthermore, the road also runs through the community la Cienega causing to relocate many residents.
This move and the cost of this move are not included in the plan.
Furthermore, the nature serves as a basin for storm water.
If this lagoon is raised and drained this will increase the risk of flooding.
The protest group says that Cabarete hardly suffers from traffic through town.
If the roads are doubled and restrictions come for suppliers of shops, the traffic can easily be led through Cabarete.

With Semana Santa the traffic hardly had any problems, said the group protesters.
Many entrepreneurs and business associations, however, are in favor of the bypass.
