To the delight of a large part of the population 183 members of the National Assembly have voted for a constitutional amendment that allows the president to be re-elected for a second four-year term.
Of the total of 220 members only 37 voted against the constitution revision.
In the entire country supporters of President Danilo Medina held meetings to celebrate the now almost certain reelection of this very popular president.
That the current president is so popular among the people is easy to understand.
With his friendly and peaceful manners, and sincere interest to the ordinary citizen this president won the hearts of large part of the population.
He promised upon taking office to improve education and tackle illiteracy.
He is now working to double the number of classrooms and set higher standards for the teachers.
He wants to raise the budget for education up to 4% of GDP.
Furthermore, the regular weekend trips to various villages and hamlets he made in the country makes him very popular among the people.
Re-election Danilo
He listens to the needs of ordinary people and tries to support them with micro credit.
The president also stimulates tourism in the country with targeted subsidies.
Tourism is still the main source of income and employer in the country.
The National Assembly has now therefore, and that is exceptional, listened to the wishes of the majority of the people and made it possible for the people to elect their president for another four years.
Hopefully Danilo Medina can fulfill all his promises, including a rigorous fight against corruption.
