On August 16, 1863, under the inspiring leadership of General Gregorio Luperon, the Spaniards were forced to surrender and deported.
Ilana Neumann justified her policy
For the second time the Dominican Republic proclaimed its independency.
For mayor Ilana Neumann this was an ideal opportunity to justify and explain her policy of the past five years for the entire city government and entrepreneurs in Sosúa.
She started her explanation with a quote from the Bible in Matthew 07:20:
'By their fruits ye shall know them'.
She continued her speech by expressing her belief in the strength and enthusiasm of the youth.
Therefore, they had invested a lot in the youth of Sosúa in the past five years.
She pointed on the developments in sports, culture and education.
For example the construction of sports facilities and the opening of a cultural center (Casa de Arte).
Hundreds of young people visited in the cultural music programs, courses pottery, painting, music, singing and dancing.
Moreover, there are ongoing art exhibits for free to the public.
More than 300 young people completed the course manufacturing jewelry and dozens of young people took part in the municipal choir and string orchestra.
In addition, investments were made in the metropolitan fire department so that it is constantly stand by and can respond effectively to emergencies.
Furthermore, cultural events have been organized, among them the Patronales parties, the Multicultural Festival, the Jazz Festival and the Summer Festival.
Also, money has been spend to support poor families.
Even coffins have been donated, but also sports equipment donated, school supplies handed out and sports tournaments organized for the youth.

The successful basketball team 'Sosúa Sharks' is also sponsored.
Poor residents have been offered free medical assistance.
Sosúa has changed into the cultural center of the north coast.
According to the mayor, the residents of the resort town are proud to be a resident of Sosúa.
