The grandson Don Andres Brugal Mateos of founder Don Andrés Brugal Montaner of the famous Brugal rum factory in Puerto Plata is no more. He died at the advance age of almost 100 years. Until recently he was still involved in the management of the world famous company.
Brugal & Co is the pride of the Dominican Republic and the third largest rum producer in the world. Only Bacardi and Captain Morgan are larger. Besides that the company creates a lot of employment, the Brugal family is also known for their social engagement with the Dominican population. They finance various projects in the fields of health care, education, research, sport and arts. They also finance environmental projects. An example is the reforestation of the Jarabacoa area. A hurricane a few years ago deforested this traditionally wooded area. They also sponsor music events like the merengue and jazz festival.
Don Andres Brugal Mateos was married to Carmen Kunhartd. They have two daughters and a son. (Irene Carmen, Carmen Milagros and Manuel Andrés Brugal Kunhartd).
