The cable car (El Teleférico) to Mount Isabel de Torres in Puerto Plata has been closed for the annual maintenance until November 22nd.
The cable car was built in 1975 by the Italian company Ceretti-Tanfanni and also the maintenance is (fortunately) in the hands of the company.
Saturday, November 22, the cable car will be open again to the public.
You can drive your car all the way up to the top of the mountain.
You can also walk up, but we don't recommend this.
So it’s better to wait until the cable car is open again.
This is the best option, because then you can enjoy the beautiful views from the cable car.
At the top you'll see a little church with a huge statue of Jesus Christ standing with his arms spread wide.
It's fun for the tourists to pose in front of the statue and have their picture taken.
There are also some very nice walks among lush vegetation.
It's a real nature park with the most beautiful flowers, plants and trees.
El Teleférico
If you are visiting Puerto Plata it is certainly worthwhile making the trip with the cable car, or as it is called here, 'El Teleférico'.
But it's best to go on a clear day when there are no clouds.
If you're lucky enough to be on the top of the mountain on a clear day then you'll have a wonderful view over Puerto Plata and the bay.
Then you can imagine why Columbus was so impressed by the natural harbour in the shadow of this mighty mountain.
