Everyone knows them: the food trays made of Styrofoam.
Every day hundreds of thousands of Styrofoam trays with food are being used in the Dominican Republic.
Also at the beach of Sosúa the fried fish or pork chops with rice and salad are sold in these trays.
Especially at weekends and in Semana Santa thousands of Styrofoam trays are used.
Styrofoam
After use, they disappear into the bins and if all goes well, they end up at the garbage dumps.
Here this plastic waste is usually incinerated, which is not harmless.
From incinerating the Styrofoam or polystyrene, very dangerous toxins escape.
But the Styrofoam trays are also carelessly thrown away and end up in the environment.
Styrofoam or polystyrene is non-degradable, but it crumbles.
It ends up in the stomachs of fish and animals and eventually in humans.
The Environment Minister wants to prohibit the use of these Styrofoam food trays for the above mentioned reasons.
A bill for this is in preparation.
