President Pedro Santana handed over the government of the country on March 18, 1861 to Spain.
He did this because the country was threatened by Haitian invasions and gang wars.
The country was ungovernable.
This resignation led to much resistance among the population, especially as the Spaniards wanted to introduce slavery again.
On August 16 1863 a group of patriots led by Gregorio Luperón and Santiago Rodríguez staged a coup in the capital, Santo Domingo.
In addition, they planted the Dominican flag on the hill of Capotillo.
This act, known as the Grito de Capotillo, marked the beginning of the War of Restoration.
