Thursday morning, September 8 there was a parade through the streets of Sosúa to commemorate that the national hero Gregorio Luperon was born 177 years ago in Puerto Plata.
Gregorio Luperón was the leader of the restoration of independence after the Spanish annexation in 1863.
Luperon joined at twenty-two years of age a group of Dominicans who rebelled against the annexation of Spain by Pedro Santana.
He was captured but managed to escape and went into exile to Haiti, the United States and Curaçao.
He secretly returned and participated in the Sabaneta uprising of 1863.
The Spanish army was defeated and Luperón accepted the position of vice president of the government.
He restored the Republic and returned to his hometown of Puerto Plata.
