These are areas which are protected by the Ministry of the Environment (Ministerio de Medio Ambiente). According to residents the hardwoods (mahogany) are cut into pieces and transported elsewhere. Less valuable trees are used as charcoal. According to the Detras del Rumor program also key government officials and military personnel are involved in this illegal logging. Local residents have already announced that they will go to the environmental service in Puerto Plata to stop these illegal practices.
