Wednesday morning October 19th at eight-thirty, members of transport unions, neighborhood organizations and political parties held another large-scale protest march.
The hundreds of participants in this protest march made a trip of 20 miles over the two-lande road between Puerto Plata - Santiago.
The march started in Imbert and ended in Puerto Plata on Town Hall Square (la Plaza Independencia).
20 Miles protest march
There petitions were presented to various government agencies.
The residents of Puerto Plata require the two-lane road to be renewed in the short term and extended into a dual carriageway.
The two-lane road between Puerto Plata and Santiago is a horror for traffic.
Daily many heavy loaded trucks use this road over the mountain range between Santiago and Puerto Plata.
Because of the mountains these trucks drive very slowly, annoying other traffic.
They often cause traffic jams.
But the road surface is also worn out in many places and it's full of holes.
The central government already promised several times that the four-lane highway between Puerto Plata and Santiago would be constructed.
But it remain, according to the participants of the protest march, empty promises.
If this protest does not work, then, according the spokespersons of the transport unions, there will be tougher protests.
