Caused by the weeklong rains, not only the residents in several villages along the rivers have suffered from the floods, also the farmers' crops are heavily affected.
All melons, carrots, cabbages, lettuce, cucumbers, tomatoes and banana plants rot because they stood under water for weeks.
The harvest is lost
The remaining crops are now suffering from a fungal infestation.
Entire crops were lost or are in danger of being lost.
Mayor Ilana Neumann set up a soup kitchen at the town hall in Sosúa where victims can pick up a hot meal consisting of chicken, rice and beans every day.
That gives some relief, but it is feared that prices for fruit and vegetables will go up dramatically in the coming weeks.
The affected residents on the north coast, so in Sosúa and surrounding area, are thus doubly affected.
