Wednesday, March 8 was the International Day of Women.
On March 8, 1908 the first strike by women took place in New York.
There was a strike because of the poor working conditions in the textile industry for women.
The strike became famous for the poetically worded demand of the women: 'bread and roses'.
The strike was the beginning of the struggle for the emancipation of women and against gender discrimination.
Also in Sosúa, much attention has been given to this event.

On Wednesday, March 8th a ceremony took place for the students of the different schools in Sosúa in the amphitheater of Casa Marina.
Dance groups and music groups brought the women present (but the men also) to a loud and thunderous applause.
As special guests some pupils of Lyceum Madre Teresa De Calcuta from Montellano and Lyceum Sabaneta de Yasica had been invited.
They surprised the attendees with beautifully sung songs dedicated to the emancipated woman.
The meeting ended with a flaming speech by Ms. Lilian Ceballos on the rights of equal treatment of women.
