In 1998, the Civil Guard (la Defensa Civil de Sosúa) was founded and Héctor Vásquez was then immediately unanimously elected chairman.
The guard consists of male and female volunteers who work unpaid at the service of the community.
They do beach service on the beach of Sosúa, assist the traffic police on busy holidays like Semana Santa, Christmas and New Year.
Also at disasters such as floods from heavy rains the guard is always there to save lives.
Thanks to the efforts of the Civil Guard, many people have been saved from drowning and their homes from flooding.
The educational organization Infotep takes care for the training of volunteers.
Every volunteer receives a first aid training among other courses.
Thanks mainly to the tireless efforts of the chairman Héctor Vásquez, the Civil Guard has become a widely respected organization.
An organization Sosúa can be proud of.
Héctor Vásquez has resigned after 18 years working for this organization to pay more attention to his family.
Rafael Garcia Arvelo has been elected as his successor.
