According to an article in Diario Puerto Plata, thanks to the Jewish community in Sosúa, we have the salami in the Dominican Republic.
In 1945, the community decided to establish a meat-processing cooperative:
'La Cooperativa Industrial Ganadera, C. por A.'.
The two cooperatives (dairy products and meat products) were later merged under the name 'Productos Sosúa'.
Salami Dominicano
It was Leo Goldstein, the grandson of the Kosher Salami manufacturer in Luxembourg, who started the production of the various kosher sausages, salami and other meat products.
He was assisted by Athur Kirstein and several Dominican staff.
Especially the salami soon became very popular among the population.
The sausage is cheap, you can store it outside a refrigerator and tastes very well even baked.
It was soon eaten in combination with white rice, beans and salad.
By this success, other meat processing companies in the Republic also decided to produce a salami.
But El Diario says it is, thanks to the Jewish community in Sosua, we now all eat salami in the Dominican Republic.
