Last Friday night, around 2am, a fire broke out in the recently opened restaurant known as the 'Wild Coyote Cocktail bar' in Calle Pedro Clisante, which was completely destroyed.
The restaurant was furnished in a lovely Caribbean style, and was an excellent addition to Sosúa's nightlife.
But because the restaurant was mostly constructed of wood, with the roof made of leaves, the fire quickly took hold.

Everything was engulfed in flames within a few minutes, and the huge flames rose up to a height well above the roof.
Everyone waited for Sosúa's fire department to arrive.
When the firemen finally showed up it was on a motorbike!
The firemen took one look at the fire and said that the town's fire truck was still in Santiago awaiting repair, so there was nothing they could do.
Luckily it began to rain at that point, so the fire didn't get the chance to also destroy the neighbouring houses.
´
About an hour later the fire truck from the airport showed up, but this was much too late to prevent the restaurant from being ruined.
People also tried to phone the fire department in Gaspar Hernández, but there was no reply, although the commander of the fire department there had agreed to help out whenever there was a fire in Sosúa.
Sosúa's fire truck has been in the garage in Santiago, awaiting repair, since May 2009!
When trying to obtain information about the matter, nobody could tell us which garage the fire truck had been sent to, or why the repair was taking so long.
Sosúa's local authority covers an area far greater than just El Batey and Charamicos - it also includes the surrounding villages, which add up to a population of around 100,000 people.
Sosúa is therefore a fairly large community that needs, and deserves, a proper fire department!
Many houses and businesses in Sosúa are largely constructed of wood.
If a serious fire breaks out then dozens of homes, bars and restaurants will be threatened!

We demand that the local authority does something about this dangerous situation - and quickly!
Mr Mayor, we expect you to take action!
