Hungarian Update (15 July 2010)

The Hungarian restaurant has closed and has now re-opened as Residencia Oasis with beer garden and wine tavern. It is not clear if it still is functioning as a restaurant but watch this space for updates.

Hungarian Restaurant Hungarian Restaurant The Hungarian Restaurant opened in late 2009 in the Playa Chiquita area of Sosua and is a 'mom and pop' operation with their son, who speaks English, helping out as waiter. It is the only Hungarian Restaurant in the area that is serving slightly spicy Hungarian food. It has outside seating (shown), some under cover seating and four or five tables inside. It is a little way out of Sosúa and best reached by car. Opened every day of the week from 6:00 pm until about 11:00pm.

The menu is almost exclusively Hungarian dishes. There are two soup starters - Hungarian Goulash Soup and Chicken Soup with shell pastry.
Hungarian Restaurant Hungarian Restaurant Seven main course dishes are on the menu ranging from Crepes filled with chopped chicken breast seasoned with 'paprikash', Hungarian Beef Stew with Gnocchi, Gipsy Roast (pork steak) with bacon, garlic and french fries. A small salad with pickled cabbage, spiced cucumber and tomatoes is served with the main course and some appetizer snacks served up before. These are included in the price.

Shown here are the Breaded Pork Chop with Mushroom Sauce and the Gypsy Roast.

Hungarian Restaurant Hungarian Restaurant There is also a Hungarian desert on the menu.

There is a limited selection of inexpensive drinks with beer, table wine by the glass and local mixed drinks.
The service is good but only from a limited menu and the portion sizes are very generous. Sometimes portions are enough to share a dish between two. Prices are in the low range on the menu and do include taxes and gratuity.
Staff speak some English, some Spanish and Hungarian.
The food is good value for money and well within $.

Worth a visit in small groups for a cheap, filling but quiet meal out!

Hungarian Restaurant can be reached from the far end of Calle Pedro Clisante past El Toro. Follow the road round to the left past the High Night club on the right and in about 250 meters it is on the left, just past the entrance to Calle Chile. The restaurant has high walls and a red neon sign.
There is parking in the road outside.
Reservations are not necessary.
