At this moment there are two hurricanes active of which Gordon has already passed by the south coast and Florence starts to gain strength, but she will probably go by further north.
She will not even come close to the Dominican Republic.
The hurricanes are born on the Atlantic Ocean in the area just off the African west coast.
Remarkably this year, however, is that the seawater temperature at the African west coast is still relatively cool, around 23 °C (74 F), and this is probably also the reason that it is still so calm in terms of hurricanes.
One of the basic ingredients of a tropical storm or hurricane is a seawater temperature of at least 27 °C (81 F).
Hurricane Florence
So maybe this year no hurricane is going to hit Sosúa.
But the hurricane season lasts until the end of November, so still a long time to go.
