Many attended Thursday evening 13 September the opening of the exhibition 'La Prensa de los 12 Años' in Casa de Arte of Sosúa.
Joaquin Balaguer succeeded the dictator Rafael Trujillo, who had died in an attack on his life, and reigned between 1966 and 1978.
La Prensa de los 12 Años
Balaguer had already been member of the government in important positions under Trujillo.
Joaquin Balaguer also hated the free press.
Journalists who criticized his government were prosecuted, and of about eight, it is certain that he had them killed.
But despite this systematic persecution of the free press, a large group of journalists had the courage to critically follow the government and denounce abuses such as corruption and nepotism.
In this exhibition, newspaper clippings from this 12-year period provide insight into the difficult circumstances these courageous journalists had to work with.
The exhibition was made available by the Resistance Museum (Museo de la Resistencia) in Santo Domingo.
The exhibition can be visited free of charge in the coming working days.
