Christmas Eve is a busy time in most neighbourhoods and suburbs.

At this time people prepare for their Christmas dinner. In Charamicos, La Unión, Montellano and Puerto Plata you'll often see whole pigs being roasted on the spit. On the previous day you could hear the squeal of pigs all around, as they met their fate ready for Christmas. Now they are all being hung over wood fires, which gives the meat an extra special flavour. Roasting a pig on a spit takes a long time to cook, so people work through the night to make sure that everything is ready for the 24th. The meat is sold for 100 pesos per pound.

There is also quite a brisk trade in roasted chickens, which are cheaper than pork.
A whole chicken from the spit will cost you 120 pesos.
Christmas is a time when entire families get together, usually at the Mother's home, to enjoy their Christmas dinner together.
The plans flying in now are full of Dominicans coming home to their families for Christmas.
During the festive season the Dominican Republic is just one big family.
