The ceremonial inauguration of Ilana Neumann
Monday, 16 August Lic Ilana Neumann was solemnly inaugurated as the new mayor of Sosúa for the coming period of six years. She replaces Lic Vladimir Céspedes, who fulfilled his duties for 4 years. The invited guests and Ilana were dressed in white, this stands for 'hope' and 'clearness', to show the people how they want to start and fulfil their term in office. The meeting was opened with the singing of the national anthem and then followed by various speeches. The first speaker was Dr. Messon who gave an interesting lecture on the origin of the name of the town of Sosúa.

The name of Sosúa is a secular word and probably dates from the Taino Indians who originally inhabited this region. The Spanish conquerors that settled later in this area have adopted this word. Next to speak was the outgoing mayor Lic Vladimir Céspedes. He recalled his services to the beach town where he drew attention to the construction of a gymnasium, three parks, a bridge and sewer. He then wished the new mayors Lic Ilana Neumann all the best for her upcoming government period of 6 years. In response to his speech there was a loud applause, but also responses with boos.

Then it was Ilana Neumanns turn for her speech in which she talked about her plans for the next 100 days. Starting this week a bulldozer will be used to clean up the still increasing garbage piles. The entire city will get a great beauty treatment. There should be a school bus, which will take the students for free to the schools and the university. The park Las Banderas will be renovated. There will be planted more green bushes and flowers to make Sosua greener. The road markings will be repainted and parking facilities updated, so that it will safer in the streets. There should be a citizens' organization established to discuss the improvements in the beach town to make it more attractive again for tourists.

There will be a care home for orphans. There will be taken regularly actions (fighting the use of insecticides and eliminating standing water) to avoid breeding ground of dengue and malaria mosquitoes in various parts of the community. The Medical and Dental care should be improved. There will come a Bureau of art and culture with promotion programs for these activities in the area. There will be more attention for sports activities and tournaments. A website will be opened with the name 'New Town Hall', where the plans can be commented on and where locals and residents can voice their opinion. The aim is to provide an emergency lighting in case of a power failure in the most critical and most unsafe corners of town.

Ilana also said that she, at the take over of the town hall, encountered a complete mess in the municipal administration and the financial policies are kind of obscure.
She will conduct an investigation on the spending of subsidy funds and if she encounters any malpractices, those responsible will be prosecuted.
Last but not least, she hopes for the support of the entire population and she said she felt confident with her team of councillors, Lic Aquelina Medina, Jhonny Matos and Arismendy Medina.
