The two sons of Luis Hess, Franklin and Cecil, came over from Germany and the USA to Sosúa in February this year to inaugurate the tombstone of their father Don Luis Hess.
After this ceremony, the brothers took the opportunity to visit friends and acquaintances.
The editors of Sosúa-News used this unique opportunity to talk with both brothers about the history of Sosúa.
Franklin has led us through Sosúa and told us facts about the historical buildings and sites in Sosúa.
We made video recordings of this tour.
La Roca
This is the second production.
Franklin tells us now about the oldest building in Sosúa, this is bar / restaurant La Roca.
At the end of the 19th century, the ‘United Fruit Company’ bought large areas of land around the current Sosúa to Cabarete, large areas of land for the cultivation of bananas and sugarcane.
The administration was located in 'La Casa Grande' in El Batey, Sosúa.
Now it is known as bar / restaurant 'La Roca'.
In the early 1900's the Company withdrew from Sosúa.
An earthquake had destroyed the port and a parasite infestation, which they did not know how to fight, destroyed the banana crop time after time.
In 1940 the building was made available to the Jewish community and they established a supermarket or Colmado in the building.
In the bay of Sosúa, opposite Sosúa Bay Hotel three basalt rocks rise above the water.
They are the remnants of the pier where the banana boats docked more than 100 years ago.
