Dr. Joseph A Rosen
Joseph Rosen was born late 19th century in Tsarist Russia.
He was a follower of the social democratic Mensheviks.
For this he was exiled to Siberia but he managed to escape to Germany.
In Heidelberg he studied chemistry.
Then retreated to the USA where he studied agriculture.
He graduated with a thesis on the agricultural chemicals.
In the '20s Dr. Rosen went to the Soviet Union again where he tried to save the Jewish community in Ukraine from starvation.
From the USA he imported agricultural machinery, seeds and capital.
One of his motivations was that he wanted to show that Jews could perform not only for the merchandise, but that they could also make a valuable contribution in agriculture and livestock.
But soon after, Rosen was deported because Stalin distrusted the foreign aid.
Back in the USA Dr. Rosen, along with Dr. James N. Rosenberg founded the 'Domican Republic Settlement Association' (DORCA).
They negotiated with the dictator Trujillo on the establishment of 100,000 Jewish refugees.
Eventually there were about 800 to arrive in a region on the north coast (Sosúa) of 11,000 acres.
It was not for free because Trujillo had DORCA pay a lot.
From 1940 Dr. Rosen traveled between New York, Santo Domingo and Sosúa up and down to arrange visas for the refugees, organizing transportation and to collect agricultural machinery and equipment.
Rosen helped the Jewish pioneers in word and deed, and worked day and night for the grateful refugees.
His knowledge of agriculture and livestock was now vital.
He was also, as a visionary, the driving force behind the formation of the Kibbutz system in the Sosúa community.
But the Kibbutz system was given up soon after the war.
Felix Koch, Arthur Kirchheimer, Joseph David Eichen, Martin Katz and Luis Hess said later that she contributions of Dr. Joseph A. Rosen stimulating, enthusiastic and indispensable to the success of the community.
Dr. Joseph A. Rosen has earned it that a street in Sosúa is called after him.
