On August 16, 2012 Danilo Medina took office as president.
With his friendly and peaceful presence and his sincere interest in the ordinary citizen (almost) everyone is behind him.
When he took office he promised to improve education and fight illiteracy.
He is now busy doubling the number of classrooms and to upgrade the skills of the teachers.
In stages he wants to bring the education budget to 4% of GDP.
Furthermore, the regular weekend trips he makes to various villages and hamlets in the country is highly appreciated among the people.
He listens to the needs of ordinary people and tries to help them with micro credits.
He also had the intention to fight corruption.
But here he's less successful.
The resistance to tackling corrupt officials, politicians, military and police is greater than he hoped for.
The president also stimulated, with targeted subsidies, tourism in the country.
Tourism is still the main source of income and mayor employer in the country.
Almost everyone we spoke to hopes that the president will run for a second term.
Danilo Medina
He says he won't.
His children and wife get to see him too little and they now want their father back again.
Others say the real reason is that he has an agreement with Leonel Fernández that he will do only one term.
Leonel Fernández has already announced that he's available again as a presidential candidate for his party, the PLD.
But recently Danilo made a slip of the tongue, when he admitted that when the whole nation wants it, he may be available for a new term.
