Saturday afternoon, January 24, 20 girls were given the opportunity to follow a course in jewelry design in the Culture House (Cas de Arte) of Sosúa.
It is the fifth course for girls, were they learn to make jewelry like earrings, brooches, pendants, bracelets and necklaces with beads, pieces of metal and metal wire, leather and thread.
So far, about 110 girls completed the four month jewelry course successfully.
To participate in the course, the girls have to be known as diligently, serious and also be of good behavior.
The course is entirely free for the participants and that includes materials, tools, transportation costs and a small meal.
The course is led by Mayor Ilana Neumann, with the assistance of the Herminia Tice Faringthon and Galia Villamán.
When the girls finish the course successfully there is a festive graduation ceremony in the presence of all the family members of the students.
Jewelry course at Casa de Arte
With this course the mayor wants girls from poor families to gain experience in creating jewelry and clothing to sell to tourists.
With this course as a foundation, the students are considered to be able to set up their own small business.
This allows them to provide an income for themselves.
