Tuesday afternoon the brigades of the environmental service, air force and Civil Guard managed to get a forest fire near the protected area in El Choco under control.
Forest fire in nature reserve El Choco
The weeklong heat wave plaguing the north of the Dominican Republic, severely affected the vegetation by the drought.
In various parts of the republic have emerged wildfires in recent days.
This also happened in the forested area of El Choco which is located 5 kilometers from Sosúa.
Due to the swift action taken by the various brigades the fire could be controlled with machetes, shovels and water.
The brigades made firebreaks between the area in fire and the nature reserve.
This way the fire had no chance to expand any further.
Experts from the fire brigade did not rule out that the fire was deliberately lit.
The police has been questioning residents who might have observed something suspicious.
