Patronales Puerto Plata
Every village and town in the Dominican Republic has a patron saint. The patron saint of Sosúa is the holy Señora de la Altagracia. The patron saint of Puerto Plata is the Apostle Felipe. One week from the date of birth of these saints it is common to celebrate this in honor of the saint. That was originally celebrated with processions where the wooden statue of the saint was carried through the streets of the town or city and all this accompanied by several Holy Masses in gratitude for the protection received from the saint. In addition to these ceremonies there has also been held a carnival.

There was always a carousel for the kids and there were also, not to forget, several beer tents. Nowadays there are not many processions, but more and more beer tents. The program for this year's Patronales Puerto Plata was announced in a press conference held in hotel Gran Ventana in Playa Dorada. The festivities are scheduled from 25 April to 3 May at the Town Hall square and consist of performances by dance groups, music groups, theater performances and exhibitions. Of course the festival will still be opened and closed with a Holy Mass at the St. Felipe Cathedral at the town hall square.
