Sylvia Berkley, president of the foundation 'Help Sosúa Kids go to School' received the Knights 'Order of Orange-Nassau'.
This ceremony took place on April 30.
The mayor of her hometown handed the knighthood order out on behalf of Her Majesty the King of the Netherlands.
Sylvia received the order because of her longstanding commitment to the local community and her tireless efforts in favor of (very poor) children in Sosúa.
She founded the 'Help Sosúa Kids go to school’ foundation to collect school equipment for the children and teachers.
Together with, among others, Judith Arvelo, she founded a school for the poorest children in Sosúa which until then were deprived to education.
She also collected money for part of the salaries of these teachers.
Sylvia travels every year several times to Sosúa with a lot of clothing, school utensils and money.
