Recently, a conference was held at Casa de Arte Sosúa on the life and work of one of the most important artists of the Dominican Republic.
It was about the life and work of Jaime Gonzalez Colson who was born in Puerto Plata in 1901.
At seventeen he traveled to Spain.
In 1918 he studied at the School of the Lonja de Barcelona.
From 1920-1923 he attended the Academy of San Fernando in Madrid.
In 1924 he moved to Paris, where he became acquainted with cubism through the work of Georges Braque, Pablo Picasso and Juan Gris.

He developed a colorful personal style based on Cubism and Italian Renaissance masters.
Besides visual artist, he was also a very good poet.
He exhibited in France, Spain, Mexico, Venezuela, Haiti and finally in the Dominican Republic.
His work still has great influence on the work of current Dominican artists.
He was a very heavy smoker and in 1975 he died of throat cancer.
The visual artist López Meléndez who currently exhibits his work in Casa de Arte, held an impassioned eulogy at this conference, on this admired artist before a large audiences in the upper room of Casa de Arte.
