Meeting with Migración and Tourism
Tuesday morning March 7, a meeting with representatives of the Ministry of Tourism and Migración took place at the amphitheater of Casa Marina. At the meeting all expats living in Sosúa had been invited. The reason for this meeting was the action taken by Migración and soldiers on February 2 in the streets of Sosúa. This has led to much misunderstanding and protests among tourists and expats. Tuesday morning many expats showed up at the amphitheater of the Casa Marina Reef. On the podium there were representatives of Migración, tourism, the municipality, ADSS and military. For Migración Rafael Antonio Núñez was present and for Tourism Julio Almonte. Julio Almonte started with sincere apologies for the actions of last February 2nd. He assured those present that every expat or tourist can walk the streets without fear of arrest in the future. Nobody will be arrested.

Then, the attendees were given the opportunity to ask questions. The chairman of the foundation ADSS (Foundation to stimulate the development of Sosúa) Mr Andres Pastoriza translated everything from spanish to English and vice versa. There was much criticism for the obscure and lengthy procedures for obtaining or renewing a residence. Rafael Antonio Núñez explained that for now you only have to submit the cedula, residency and passport for a renewal. On the Migración website this procedure will be announced shortly. It was also promised that at City Hall of Sosúa (within a week) an official from Migración will hold consultations where assistance is provided for obtaining a residence. At the end of the meeting, Julio Almonte promised that soon a meeting with the police takes place. This to discuss problems with obtaining the necessary documents for obtaining or renewing a residence.
