The residents of Puerto Plata are upset and angry because they have discovered that the renovation of the central park (Parque Central) also includes cutting down some beautiful century-old trees that give the park its unique atmosphere.
Although the park is currently blocked off by a massive high wall, several photographers have succeeded in capturing this destruction.
The photos of this tree felling are circulating throughout the town and being distributed from hand to hand.
And they're gone
The trees are cut down
The trees are hundreds of years old and were, according to residents, here when the Haitians ruled, the government was led by folk-hero Gregorio Luperón, throughout the American occupation and during the valiant resistance by Puerto Plata residents against the dictator Trujillo.
Residents surrounding the square demand that Mayor Walter Musa immediately call a halt to such criminal activities, and ensure that the guilty are punished (because the residents feel that its a crime to fell such beautiful trees).
The General Director for Environmental Affairs, who gave permission for the felling of these historic and important trees, Mr Eladio Martínez, was not available for comment.
